PITTSFIELD, Maine — A Clinton man was killed Wednesday when his Harley-Davidson motorcycle drifted into the path of a logging truck, got caught underneath the truck’s front end and caught fire.  The man, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 5 p.m. on Route 2, just east of Sibley Pond Bridge, Pittsfield police Officer Marty Cochran said Thursday night. It was not clear if Moody was wearing a helmet. “None was found at the scene,” Cochran said.

Cochran said that the driver of the logging truck, a 25-year-old man, was able to escape the burning truck without injury. The truck was owned by the family business in Sherman.

The accident remained under investigation Thursday, Cochran said. An accident reconstructionist from the Maine State Police has been called in. Pittsfield police also were assisted by personnel from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department and the Pittsfield and Canaan fire departments.

BANGOR, Maine — A Bucksport couple was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries they suffered Monday afternoon when they were struck from behind on Odlin Road.  The couple, both 68, were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, said Sgt. Chip Hodges. The woman suffered a leg injury and her husband had unspecified minor injuries, Hodges said, citing a police report. The two still were being evaluated early Monday evening, a hospital nursing supervisor said.

Hodges said the accident happened about 3 p.m. near the intersection with Interstate 395. The couple, who were driving separate motorcycles, were stopped in traffic waiting to make a turn when the the wife’s 2005 Honda was struck from behind by a 2003 Toyota driven by a man, 30, of Hampden. The impact pushed the woman’s bike into her husband’s 2005 Suzuki, destroying hers and causing significant damage to his, Hodge said, citing an accident report. The report said the driver of the Toyota told police that he was distracted by a horn and took his eyes off the road for a moment, Hodges said. He said that when he saw the motorcycles he was unable to avoid a collision.

MACHIAS, Maine — A New Hampshire man and his passenger each suffered broken legs Sunday when their motorcycle was struck by a car at a downtown intersection, according to the local police chief.  A man, 74, of Sunapee, N.H., was driving his 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle north on Route 192 around 4 p.m. when he ran a stop sign at the road’s intersection with Court Street, Police Chief Grady Dwelley said late Monday afternoon.  The motorcycle was struck in the intersection by a 1996 Ford Taurus driven by a woman, 55, of Machias, the chief said. The driver of the motorcycle and his passenger, a woman, 76, of Dover-Foxcroft, took the brunt of the impact when they were hit by the car, he said.

Both the driver of the motorcycle and his passenger suffered broken legs in the collision while the driver of the Ford Taurus was unharmed. The motorcycle was “remarkably intact” after the accident, Dwelley said, though it had approximately $1,000 in damage. The car had a crack in its front fiberglass bumper, which Dwelley said also likely would cost $1,000 to fix.  The driver of the motorcycle and his passenger were taken to Down East Community Hospital in Machias for treatment after the collision, the chief said. The passenger later was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for additional treatment of her broken leg bones, he said.

Dwelley said that there have been at least three accidents at that same intersection this summer, but he said that driver inattention and unfamiliarity have been considered the main contributing factors in those collisions.  “The intersection is well marked,” he said.

TURNER, ME — An Auburn woman was killed Wednesday afternoon when her motorcycle struck the side of a pickup truck on Route 4. Police said a 54-year-old woman of 20 Gage Lane was killed instantly when her 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle was struck by a pickup driven by a man, 73, of Turner. The woman was not wearing a helmet, according to a press release issued by the Maine State Police Thursday morning.

According to the release, the investigating officer, Trooper Ricci Cote, said speed and alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident. State police were reconstructing the crash as part of their investigation into the fatal wreck, which occurred at about 3:30 p.m. The crash took place as the driver of the pickup made a left hand turn in front of the motorcycle, at the intersection of Oakwood Drive, the release stated. After the crash, the truck, a white pickup with a plow in front and a sander in back, came to a stop at the side of Route 4 in front of Oakwood Drive, a short road leading into a mobile home park. The motorcycle came to rest on the paved shoulder a few feet away.

The crash forced the closure of a stretch of Route 4 between the Chickadee Restaurant and the plaza that houses the Big Apple and Dunkin’ Donuts. Afternoon commuter traffic was rerouted around the scene, onto Fern Street to the south, Wood Street to the north.

JAY, Maine — Police have closed Route 4 in North Jay while reconstructing the scene of an accident where a New Hampshire man’s motorcycle was rear-ended by a van driven by a Sumner man on Monday afternoon.  The motorcyclist had either slowed down or stopped north of the intersection of Routes 4 and 17 when he was rear-ended by a van, according to Jay Police Chief Larry White, Sr.  According to dispatch records, the call to report the crash came in at 2:24 p.m.  The motorcyclist was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment, White said.

WINTHROP, ME — A Dresden man was hospitalized with serious injuries following a motorcycle accident on Route 202 in Winthrop on Tuesday morning.  The man, 51, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center by helicopter after being injured when his motorcycle hit an SUV near the transfer station just before noon, Winthrop police Detective Peter Struck said.  The injuries to the man’s legs were serious but not life-threatening, Struck said. The accident occurred when another driver of an SUV, 75, of East Winthrop, turned left across the eastbound lane of Route 202, Struck said.  The man on the motorcycle tried to stop but was unable to, slamming into the passenger-side door of the SUV. Both vehicles were towed following the accident, Struck said. Police continue to investigate the accident.

DAYTON, ME — A motorcyclist had to be transported by ambulance to Maine Medical Center this morning after his bike went off the Height Road in Dayton and struck a tree.  Major William King Jr. of the York County Sheriff’s Department said a 44-year-old man was travelling west on Height Road when he failed to negotiate a curve and went off the road. The accident took place around 10 a.m.  The man, who was operating a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle, was rushed to Portland with what King described as serious injuries. He was listed in serious condition at Maine Medical Center.

BLUE HILL, Maine – A Bucksport man was injured Monday afternoon in a motorcycle accident on Route 15.  According to Trooper Dan Ryan of the Maine State Police, a man, 43, was traveling north on Route 15 and attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Beech Hill Road. He turned into the path of a vehicle driven by a man, 18, of Orland.  The driver of the motorcycle suffered internal injuries and was taken initially to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. His injuries were not considered to be life-threatening, according to Ryan.

The driver of a Ford Taurus and the three passengers in his vehicle were not injured in the crash. 

The 2001 Honda motorcycle was considered a total loss, and the 2000 Ford Taurus also sustained significant damage.

LITCHFIELD, ME — A 20-year-old man was taken by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center following a motorcycle crash on Route 197 on Sunday afternoon. The man of Litchfield was taken by helicopter from a landing site in Richmond to the Lewiston hospital following the single-vehicle crash that occurred shortly before 4 p.m. No information about Fallon’s condition was available Sunday night, according to a nursing supervisor at CMMC.

Trooper Jason Madore of the Maine State Police said that the crash occurred where Route 197 intersects with John Tarr and Dead River roads. Madore said that man was eastbound on Route 197 when he came around a corner at an unsafe speed and lost control of his 2004 Yamaha motorcycle. Madore said that the man was thrown from the motorcycle when it overturned. “The operator was wearing a helmet, which is definitely what saved his life,” Madore said. Madore said that the posted speed limit on that stretch of Route 197 in 45 mph. He added that drugs and alcohol were not considered factors in the crash, just speed. The accident remains under investigation.

York, ME – Police say a bicycle and motorcycle crashed into one another Wednesday in York, leaving both riders injured.  Around 4pm, police say a 16-year-old boy on a bike rode into the path of a motorcycle on Route 1 near York Wild Kingdom. The motorcyclist and teen were both thrown into the road.  The operator of the motorcycle, a 70-year-old man of Madison New Hampshire and the teen, of York, both suffered possible broken bones. The teen will not be charged, according to police.
